So dainty yet so hypnotic and magical šŸ˜

Moonstone also known as 'adularia' named after Mt Adular in Switzerland. Not only this place is the famous source for these gems, it also describes the moonstone characteristics and the phenomenal effect.

Moonstone is the popular name used for gem quality feldspar that exhibits the phenomenon of adularescence (a soft glow light that appears to float just below the surface of a polished gemstones), in a cabochon.

The glow of moonstone is dynamic and appears to move within the stone when one of three occasion occurs: 1. The source of illumination moves 2. The angle of observation change 3. The gemstone is move under the light.

Adularescence is caused by the diffraction of light as it hits thin, alternating layers of orthoclase and albite within the gem, a crystal structure that shimmers as light rays are refracted and scattered within the gem. This produces the appearance of floating, cloud like, blue to white light inside the gem. In orthoclase moonstone, a blue sheen is produced if the albite crystals are very fine.

This magic gem has always been associated with ā€˜the light of the silvery moon'

The one in this photo is known as Rainbow Moonstone. One of my favourites! It can be considered as the best of colors as it flashes with shades of green, blue, purple and pink.
